Saint John Mark church — 360° Virtual Tour in Byblos

Saint John Mark Church stands in the heart of the old town of Byblos, near the archaeological site and the ancient fortifications.

Built during the Crusader period, the church remains one of the main historical landmarks of the old city. Its sober volumes, limestone walls, and nave shaped by Mediterranean light reflect the medieval religious architecture once present along the Levantine coast.

Inside, the building preserves a quiet and mineral atmosphere, where traces of time remain visible through the stone surfaces, proportions, and architectural details.

A brief history of Saint John Mark church

Saint John Mark Church was built during the Crusader era, when the city of Byblos — then known as Gibelet — became part of the Latin states established in the Eastern Mediterranean.

It remains one of the main religious buildings preserved within the historic old town, alongside the Greek Orthodox church of Saidet al Najat, which dates back to the Byzantine period.

The historic center of Byblos still preserves several medieval and Ottoman constructions integrated into an urban fabric that remains inhabited today. Fortifications, narrow streets, religious buildings, and historic structures all reflect the city’s continuity of occupation across centuries.
