The Roman colonnade — Byblos archaeological site

Structuring circulation

In the Roman period, the site of Byblos is reorganised around clearer circulation axes.

The colonnade marks one of those structured routes, linking different parts of the site through a new ordering of space.

The columns are not merely decorative: they define a path, accompany movement, and organise the city according to a more regular logic.

This transformation does not replace what already existed; it adapts it. Materials are reused and spaces are redefined, in a continuity specific to the site.

The colonnade thus reflects a period in which Byblos integrates the urban models of the Roman world while preserving traces of its earlier phases.
