The old harbor — 360° Virtual Tour in Byblos
The old harbor of Byblos lies within a small natural bay located north of the archaeological promontory.
From the waterfront, the view unfolds between fishing boats, the stone buildings of the old town, and the remains overlooking the coastline. The landscape brings together several layers of time: a maritime space still in use, a historic town that remains inhabited, and an archaeological site occupied for thousands of years.
The present-day harbor still reflects the Mediterranean identity of Byblos. However, archaeological research indicates that the ancient harbor installations extended across different coastal areas of the promontory, particularly around the two bays bordering the ancient site.

This immersive experience allows visitors to observe the present harbor within its urban and coastal environment.
The area is still marked by everyday maritime activities linked to fishing and local circulation. Boats, stone piers, and sea-facing facades continue to reflect the long relationship between the city and the Mediterranean coastline.
Byblos and the sea
The ancient site of Byblos developed on a promontory controlling two natural bays: one to the north, corresponding to the area of the present harbor, and another to the south.
From the 3rd millennium BC onward, Byblos became an active maritime center connecting the Levant with ancient Egypt. Trade included cedar wood, wine, agricultural products, and Egyptian papyrus redistributed across the Mediterranean world.
Over successive historical periods, the coastal installations were progressively transformed. The visible harbor structures today therefore do not directly correspond to the ancient harbor facilities, even though the area has maintained its maritime role since Antiquity.
Today, the harbor remains primarily associated with fishing activities and local daily life at the foot of the historic old town.
